In honor of Juneteenth and the horrors Black people faced to gain their freedom, here’s the story of an enslaved man who made a daring escape away from our “beloved American hero”, George Washington.
Harry Washington doesn’t have his face carved into a mountain, or even appear in most George Washington history books. The man who enslaved him and so many others got that honor. It’s not much, but at least one more horny man knows Harry’s name.
Please note that the reason I refer to Harry as his enslaved name, “Harry Washington” is because it’s the name he chose to use after running away, and his birth name is unknown.
The picture is exactly what you think it is and it’s not our Harry Washington. Although, it is hairy.
I wish I could tell you that was the end of Harry’s hardships, but unfortunately in Nova Scotia awaited frigid temperatures, poverty and a lack of food. Harry eventually moved to Sierra Leone where he helped set up a colony for free people of color.
I would like to live in a world where Harry Washington was our past president and the one monumentalized as a great leader instead of his capturer.
