So I work in the animation industry and since I was a kid and saw The Jungle Book, I wanted to work for Disney. It was my dream, my bucketlist and honestly I had my ego riding on it. I got to work for Dreamworks (on Shrek!) and Sony Animation (sadly, not on radioactive spiders but another show). As I learned about all the politics and how much animators (still) get shit on, I still wanted to work for Disney however, even as different as the company is, his history is much like Hershey's and I've had a hard time with that knowing this history behind him. It's kinda like seeing the man behind the curtain of Oz to an extent, still bums me out.
Thanks for this great post, Brooke B, it hit home.
I understand why you would want to work with a company like Disney with such name recognition. Perhaps it is better run now although I truly have no idea. I hope you find a fantastic employer. ♥️
Thanks BB! I have a fantastic employer (my wife who loves my work). I’m happy to have worked with Dreamworks and Sony. That was huge, Disney just holds a special place in my heart however I knew so much about how he abused his animators
Wow! I had no idea this story about Walt Disney ! Holy cow !!
Thank you for sharing the dark side of Disney. He sure put on a different face for cameras, didn’t he? Not surprising, I guess, in retrospect. But surprising to me, none-the-less. 🐭
I guess that the Disney company (last I knew, anyway) still has a way with stiffing their workers - at least the cast members who work in the parks. I know they get paid a pittance (like Walmart employees, come to think of it), but they love having that name on their resume.
I have Cirque du Soleil on my own resume, so I can understand wanting a big name on a resume.
It makes me feel so sad that these corporations become so big, then get greedy.

Thank you again for writing up history & making it interesting to read & get into the story. I look forward to more issues from you.

Following up on this (now dated) comment. I wrote about the state of the industry Brooke if you’re interested
