Make America Learn History Again: The Hershey Strike of 1937
It’s real history, as told by the All American Man in my inbox and me.
Happy Labor Day America and Canada. If you aren’t American, I promise you’ll still want to read this one.
If you’re new here, these men think I’m a Republican because my troll profile I use to lure them in is an all American MAGA fiend. Donny joins us now with a little history about America’s beloved chocolate.
This strike failed, but American Hershey workers were able to unionize under the Bakery and Confectionery Union. Since so many websites and books follow the story as told by Hershey, the actual details of this strike aren’t well known besides by labor historians.
I found this story through this episode by Labor History Today featuring a snippet of a speech by historian Carol Quirke. Immediately I was entranced and had to listen to her full speech and snippets of her book Eyes on Labor. For further information on Hershey I used, Making Chocolate American: Labor, Tourism and the American Empire in the Hershey Company by Catherine Koonar.

Who knew facts could change the mind of a republican 😳
