Horny History: The United States Public Health Service Syphilis Study In Tuskegee
It’s real history, as told by some dude in my inbox and me.
I’m impatient. When I’m in the mood to tell a man about history, I don’t want to wait hours for him to respond. This one caught the start of my Horny History on Guatemala, but he wasn’t fast enough to hear that story. I’ll link that post at the bottom. Instead, he got to learn about the USPHS syphilis study in Tuskegee (1932-1962).
Where, although they didn’t infect people with syphilis, they did watch as black men and their families died of it even though there was a treatment available. They intentionally let it spread through these black communities as they watched. Here is their story.
You might have heard of this as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Although the Tuskegee Institute was involved, they were not behind the malicious part of the experiment. The researchers knew that black people weren’t going to trust them, so they asked the Tuskegee Institute, a foundation run by black people, to help. The institute agreed because they right it might help them get federal funds and they needed the money to help the black people in their community.
The United States Government was in control of this experiment and let it continue for 40 years.
